Devizes Hockey Club is a community club that strives to provide a fun and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy the game of hockey. This includes our players, parents and care providers, supporters, spectators, and of course, our umpires.
Respecting the Umpires
Quite simply, our matches would not be possible without the dedication of our umpires, who volunteer their time and expertise to ensure fair play.
Umpiring hockey can be tough – especially in a game where the ball can move so quickly that it can be difficult to follow at times.
There is always the temptation to point out errors in decisions or faults that were not seen by those officiating.
Very few officials (in any sport) get it right 100% of the time. The umpire must balance what they see, ensure the safety of the players and try and keep the game moving forward in a positive way.
It is therefore important that players, parents, supporters, and spectators show the umpires gratitude, kindness, and courtesy at all times.
Disagreeing with an Umpire's Call?
If there is a disagreement with an umpire's call, it should be channelled through the team captain. The captain is ultimately responsible for the conduct of the team and its supporters – and could ultimately be penalised if others fail to demonstrate respect.
Upholding the Spirit of the Game
Let's all work together to uphold the spirit of the game by playing fairly, respecting the umpires, and creating a positive environment for everyone involved.
Together, we can continue to make Devizes Hockey Club a great place to play, watch, and enjoy the sport of hockey!
